Cloud Concepts – AWS CLF-C02 Study Guide
This domain accounts for 24% of the exam and focuses on why cloud exists, how AWS structures its infrastructure, and the foundational frameworks AWS uses to describe best practices and adoption. Questions test conceptual understanding and the ability to distinguish between similar-sounding terms. Memorization of definitions matters less than knowing when and why you'd choose one option over another.
Benefits of Cloud Computing
The six classic benefits AWS emphasizes:
| Benefit | What it means in exam language |
|---|---|
| Agility | Faster time-to-market; provision resources in minutes, not weeks |
| Elasticity | Scale up and down automatically to match demand |
| Cost savings | Trade CapEx for OpEx; pay only for what you use |
| Global reach | Deploy worldwide in minutes using AWS infrastructure |
| Economies of scale | AWS's aggregate usage lowers per-unit costs for everyone |
| High availability | Remove single points of failure; built-in redundancy |
CapEx vs. OpEx distinction – On-premises = CapEx (buy servers upfront, depreciate over time). Cloud = OpEx (pay as you go, expense immediately). The exam often asks which model "reduces upfront capital expenditure" — the answer is always cloud/OpEx.
Elasticity vs. scalability trap – Elasticity implies automatic scaling in both directions. Scalability just means the ability to grow. AWS Auto Scaling is elastic; manually adding instances is scalable but not elastic.
Cloud Deployment Models
- Public cloud – All infrastructure on AWS; no on-premises hardware. Default assumption for most exam scenarios.
- Private cloud – Infrastructure operated solely for one organization; on-premises or hosted. AWS does not offer a "private cloud" product per se (don't confuse with a VPC).
- Hybrid cloud – Mix of on-premises and AWS. Services that indicate hybrid: AWS Direct Connect, AWS VPN, AWS Outposts, AWS Storage Gateway.
Decision criteria: If a question mentions regulatory/compliance requirements that force on-premises data residency plus cloud workloads, the answer is hybrid.
