Understanding Tableau Concepts – Desktop Specialist Study Guide

This domain accounts for 15% of the exam — the smallest slice, but it underpins everything else. It covers the core conceptual vocabulary: dimensions vs measures, discrete vs continuous, aggregation and granularity, the workbook structure, file types, and the Tableau product family. These concepts recur throughout the other domains, so solidifying them pays off across the whole exam.

Dimensions vs Measures

  • Dimensions — qualitative/categorical fields used to slice data (names, categories, dates).
  • Measures — quantitative fields that are aggregated (sales, quantity, profit).

Tableau assigns fields on connection by data type, but you can reclassify a field. Converting a numeric measure to a dimension makes Tableau treat its distinct values as categories (no aggregation); converting a field to a measure aggregates it.

Discrete vs Continuous

  • Discrete (blue) — distinct headers/categories.
  • Continuous (green) — a continuous axis (a range).

Crucially, this is separate from dimension vs measure. A date dimension can be used as discrete (distinct month headers/panes) or continuous (a time axis for a trend line). A continuous date on Columns produces a continuous time axis; a discrete date produces separate headers. This separation is the concept the exam most loves to test.
